what makes the cut?
This isn’t a full list of every eatery or watering hole in Auckland. It’s a collection of my favourites — places I actually love. Whether it’s a spot I’ve found on my own or something I’ve been invited to try, contra or not, I’ll only share what I genuinely rate and would recommend to a friend. Nothing gets added to this site unless it delivers something special.
Here’s what I look for when deciding what makes the cut:
Would I go back?
That’s always the first question. If I’m already planning my next visit on the way out the door. It’s on the list.Hospitality and service.
I want to feel seen and welcomed! And no, not in an “influencer” way. I mean as a genuine customer. I want the banter, the chat, the sense that I belong. Even when it’s flat-out busy, good spots make you feel at home.Food and drinks of value.
Delicious is a given. But the overall experience needs to feel worth it. It doesn’t have to be fancy or pricey, or cut-price and cheap, it just has to deliver on what it promises.Atmosphere that matches the energy.
This is a big one! The environment needs to align with the experience!
If I’m in a fine dining establishment, I want storytelling, produce knowledge, and that polished hospitality that makes it feel special.
If I’m grabbing dumplings down a side alley, I want the hustle, the speed, the noise - maybe even a telling off for not having the right change by my Chinese aunty! The best places own their vibe completely, whatever it is.
Because for me, food and drink are the greatest joys in life — they bring people together in a way nothing else can. The real magic? When a place nails the setting, the flavour, the feeling, and leaves you with a memory that sticks. That’s what I’m chasing. And that’s what earns a spot on this list.
